Are All Baby Gates Weather Resistant?

Modified on Wed, 2 Jul at 2:20 PM

No – not all baby gates are designed to withstand outdoor conditions, and using the wrong gate outside can lead to premature wear or safety issues.

Indoor vs Outdoor Use

Most baby gates, particularly those made from metal or featuring plastic components, are intended for indoor use only. Prolonged exposure to moisture, UV rays, and temperature changes can cause rusting, fading, and deterioration.

All metal gates in the Perma Child Safety range are not suitable for outdoor use.

Best Gate for Outdoor Use

For outdoor areas like decks, porches, and garden pathways, we recommend our Retractable Gate range.

These gates are designed specifically with outdoor durability in mind and feature:

  • UV-resistant, stain-resistant mesh

  • Hardware-mounted design for secure installation

  • 3-way locking mechanism for extra safety

  • Suitable for both children (6–24 months) and pets (4.5–18kg / 10–40 lbs)

They’re ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, hallways, and entryways.

Occasional Outdoor Use

If you need to use an indoor gate outside temporarily, it should be closely monitored, brought inside when not in use, and regularly checked for wear to avoid weather-related damage.

The Retractable Gate range is a great flexible option — it can be easily removed from its wall mounts for indoor storage or reinstalled in a different location when moving between indoor and outdoor areas.

For long-term outdoor safety, always choose a gate specifically built for the elements, like our Retractable Gate range.
